Architecture by Alvar Aalto 3: The workers’ club, Jyväskylä
The booklets in this series present buildings designed by Alvar Aalto, with introductory texts based either on Alvar Aalto’s own writings or on articles written by architectural experts. The contents are enlivened by photographs and architectural drawings of the buildings then and now. The serie has been published since 1976.
Aalto has on many occasions alluded to the inspiring part played by southern, and especially Italian landscape and architecture in his work at different stages. In the design of the Jyväskylä Workers’ Club are traces of the old southern building tradition, as applied in the classicist spirit pervasive in Finland during the early 1920’s.
